Our Research on Artificial Intelligence

This project explores how community colleges can help prepare today’s workforce for the growing number of careers that require artificial intelligence (AI) skills. By partnering with local industries and college instructors, the project is developing a model for building AI literacy—helping both educators and learners gain the knowledge and confidence needed to engage with AI in workforce oriented, practical, and responsible ways.

In collaboration with five community colleges, our research focuses on understanding what community college instructors and learners need to successfully teach and learn about AI. We’re asking key questions such as:

  • What do instructors need to know about AI to prepare middle-skilled workers for AI-related careers?
  • How do community colleges adapt AI learning materials to fit their local industries and student needs?
  • How can professional development best support instructors integrating AI into their courses?
  • How do AI literacy courses help students build foundational skills and prepare for four-year degrees or AI-related jobs?
  • How can colleges work together to strengthen pathways from associate to bachelor’s degree programs in AI?

Why It Matters

AI is transforming the workplace, and community colleges play a vital role in ensuring that workers are ready for this change. This research will provide evidence and practical examples of how colleges can build AI-focused programs that are effective, locally relevant, and responsive to industry needs. Ultimately, the findings will guide other colleges nationwide in developing AI pathways that connect adult learners to advanced degrees and rewarding careers.
